Updated: Sep 4, 2020

VIDEO - Measure names and values are generated fields in Tableau. Meaning they do not come from the original data connected to Tableau but rather Tableau automatically generates them whenever you connect data.

Measure Names field always appear at the bottom of dimension area in the data pane and contains the names of all measures in the data - all collected into a single field with discrete values.

Measure Values field on the other hand appear at the bottom of the measure area in the data pane and contains all measures in the data – all collected into a single field with continuous values.

Measure Names and Values are just like other fields in Tableau;

  • You can use it in filtering – Measure Name.

  • You can format the them.

  • You can drag drop them to shelves and cards.

  • You can assign allies – Measure Name
