CHAPTER 1:
In this chapter, we will take a look at the business intelligence (BI) market, before jumping in to explore Tableau (a leader in BI market) and its products - particularly those to be used in this course and also those you might come across in real-life Tableau projects.
In detail, the chapter will explain why you should learn Tableau and guide you installing your own copy of Tableau. The last part of the section we'll share a rich resource of Tableau online help to guide you in the event you’re stuck in a real life Tableau project.
CHAPTER 2:
This chapter shall provide all resources required in the course. This include,
-
Datasets
-
Any other files used in the course
CHAPTER 3:
In this chapter, we will teach you the Tableau Desktop interface, so you can understand everything about the look and the feel as well as how Tableau interprets data once connected.
The Tableau Desktop interface comprises of; the start page, the data source page, the data pane and the analytics pane. In detail the chapter will also teach you how Tableau interprets data, such as data types, the green and blue fields, generated fields, file types, visual cues and icons as well as how to create your first basic view.
CHAPTER 4:
In this chapter, we will teach you how to set a Tableau data source. A Tableau data source contains data connection information that describes the data you want to bring in Tableau.
The chapter will explore in details how to get your data ready for analysis through; building relationships, data joining, data blending, data union, pivoting data, working with Tableau interpreter feature and splitting a field into multiple fields.
Once you grasp how to connect and prepare your data, we'll teach you how to set data source filters to limit the amount of data in the data source or restrict the data users can see, before showing you how you can extract data (to improve performance ) in Tableau.
CHAPTER 5:
Once you understand the Tableau workspace and learn how to set your first Tableau data source. We will teach you how to organize your data pane and edit default properties in Tableau.
The chapter will dwell much on how to organize and transform your data to solve different business questions.
Some of the vital skills you will acquire in this chapter include;
Learning how to create name aliases, learning how to group data, learning how to create hierarchies, learning how to create and work with sets, learning how to create combined fields, learning how to customize date and time fields
CHAPTER 6:
In this chapter, we will briefly introduce you to Tableau charts. The class will cover some of the basic charts to create, yet powerful in data interpretation. In detail, the chapter will also cover the following;
-
How to add visual details on your visualizations to convey your data stories
-
How to sort data in your visualizations to guide users interpret your view (visualization)
-
How to limit data used in your viz, to let users apply a subset of the data in analysis
CHAPTER 7:
In this chapter you will learn how to create and edit calculated fields. Calculated fields allow you to create new data from the data that already exists in the data source. By creating a calculated field you are essentially creating a new field (or column) in your data source.
Some of the skills you will acquire on Tableau calculations include;
How to work with arithmetic calculations, how to work with string functions, how to work with date functions, how to work with number functions, how to work with logical functions, how to work with table calculations, working with (LOD) Level of detail expressions, working with aggregation options, adding grand totals and sub-totals.
CHAPTER 8:
In this chapter you will cover the advanced charts which go beyond the basics. These charts can be specific in how they are applied or require Tableau calculations skills to build them.
Some of the advanced charts you will learn in this section include; Doughnut chart, Bullet chart, Bar-in-bar chart, Histogram graph, Box and Whisker plot, Funnel chart, Bump chart, Waterfall chart, Word cloud, Gantt chart, Slope chart, Pareto chart, Population pyramid chart etc.
CHAPTER 9:
In this chapter you will learn about maps in Tableau, maps are useful in answering spatial questions or understanding trends and patterns in data.
Some of the key areas to be covered in this chapter include;
Exploring the Tableau mapping workspace, editing location names and assigning geographical roles, creating maps from spatial files, creating point distribution maps, creating dual axis (layered) maps, creating filled maps with pie charts, creating heatmaps (density maps), creating custom territories, adding Mapbox maps in Tableau, using background images in Tableau.
CHAPTER 10:
In this chapter you will learn how to perform analysis in the Tableau Desktop to spot trends and patterns in your data. The section will explore analytics objects present in the analytics pane.
In details you will learn....
How to add reference lines and bands to your views, how to add reference distributions (creating a bullet chart), working with trend lines, adding statistical summary card, clustering in Tableau, forecasting in Tableau, how to create a spine chart.
CHAPTER 11:
In this chapter you will learn how to format your views to make them more user friendly and appealing to the users by changing the shape, size, color and even orientation of texts or images used in the viz.
Some of items to be discussed in this chapter include;
-
How to format a view
-
Using titles, captions and tooltips
-
Formatting numbers and null values
-
Formatting results with annotations
CHAPTER 12:
In this chapter, you will learn how to work with parameters in Tableau. Parameters are global placeholder values such as a number, string or date that can replace a constant value in a calculation, filter or reference line.
In this chapter you will learn;
How to create parameters in Tableau, how to apply parameters with filters, how to apply parameters with calculations, how to apply parameters with reference lines, how to apply parameters in histogram bins, how to use parameters to swap measures, how to use parameters in cross-database filtering.
CHAPTER 13:
In this chapter, you will learn how to create dashboards and stories, add interactivity and much more.
Dashboards and stories are simply a graphical user interface which provides at-a-glance views of the key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to a particular objective or business process.
Rather than having users navigate each stand-alone worksheets in your workbook - in this section you will learn how to combine several worksheets together to create dashboards and stories (a single source of view) - letting users compare a variety of data simultaneously.
CHAPTER 14:
In this chapter, you get to apply your Tableau knowledge in selected data visualization projects. The goal here is to help students learn through practice as well as gain courage working with Tableau.
The chapter has four projects, in which three of them are instructor-led and the last project is solely dedicated for the students - each student shall plan, design and solve the last project as he or she deems best.
In each project, data and project's objectives will be provided.
