Creating Executive Friendly Landing Pages in Power BI

What is a Landing Page?

A landing page is a deliberately designed introductory screen that appears before users access detailed analytics, providing a clear overview of the report’s purpose, guiding navigation to different sections, and offering essential context such as instructions, metric definitions, and data refresh information to ensure a smooth, intuitive user experience.

It can be summarized as the first page users see when they open a report, designed to act as a home screen, navigation hub, and context setter for the entire report.

The official Power BI documentation defines a landing page as the page that report consumers see first, regardless of which page was active when the report was last saved. Note, you can set any report page as the landing page using the page tab context menu or the Format pane.

Setting a Page as the Landing Page

Option 1: Using the page tab context menu

• Right-click the page tab at the bottom of the report.

• Select Set as landing page.

Option 2: Using the Format Page

• With nothing selected on the page canvas, open the Format pane.

• Expand Page information.

• Turn on the Landing page toggle.

A landing page icon appears on the page tab to indicate which page is set as the landing page. The report footer also identifies the current landing page.

Customizing the Landing Page

Customizing a landing page involves tailoring the layout, visuals, and navigation elements to match the needs of your audience and the identity of your organization. This typically includes adjusting colors and themes to align with brand guidelines, adding clear navigation buttons or icons for different report sections, and incorporating helpful context such as instructions, data refresh notes, or metric definitions. By refining these elements, you create a polished, intuitive entry point that guides users smoothly into the rest of the dashboard.

In this example, I have customized my landing page, by adding a background image and navigation buttons.

To add a background image...

• Open Format pane.

• Go to canvas background and add your image.

Navigation buttons added to enable users navigate to other sections of the report with ease.
